Gradually, his fierce assault wins the respect of both the woman and Tanner’s men (at least those that remain alive). In the book’s final scene, Tanner is humiliated: his Mexican foreman refuses to order his remaining hands to attack Valdez, and Tanner’s woman refuses to return to him.
