The son of the writers William Shawcross and Marina Warner, he attended Westminster School, where he waged a mock-political campaign to abolish the letter J (his slogan: “Ban the Hook”). One of his earliest artworks was a black Ford Capri Soulcatcher, kitted out with scaffolding poles and fishing rods. “It was stolen by a scrapmetal merchant and crushed,” Shawcross tells me. “I was heartbroken.” In his spare time he performs as a trapeze artist known as the Lead Butterfly.
